A tea house, where the clouds drift gently and the breeze is light, invites you to quietly watch the clouds gather and disperse, letting go of life’s gains and losses. If you can momentarily step outside the world, savoring tea and meditating is surely an excellent choice.
The Chinese literati’s pursuit of leisure and repose, beginning with Zhuangzi and passing through such eminent figures of the Wei and Jin dynasties as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and Tao Yuanming, continued into the Tang and Song periods with Wang Wei, Bai Juyi, and Su Dongpo, and later flourished in the Ming era among scholars like Chen Jiru, Yuan Zhonglang, and Wen Zhenheng—thus giving rise to a tradition of “retiring to quiet seclusion.” Whether composing poems, reciting verses, writing calligraphy, or painting, whether indulging in fine objects or savoring tea and wine, they remained serene and at ease even amid life’s countless trials.
In the design of this project, the challenge lies in achieving tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle, thereby creating a serene and refined space.
The project is a fairly typical commercial space, comprising two distinct levels—one above the other. To create an inward‑looking space that offers emotional solace, we began by carefully organizing and reconfiguring the spatial layout.
A transitional treatment is applied to the rich yet complex relationship between the tranquil interior space and the open exterior space.
